The Aislinn Centre was established by Survivors of Institutional Abuse, Christine Buckley and Carmel McDonnell-Byrne. Christine has been speaking about these atrocities for more than 28 years. The Centre is open to all Survivors of Institutional Abuse and their families, who wish to use the services provided. Christine and Carmel work on a voluntary basis at the centre.
The Aislinn Centre was established by the former Taoiseach, Mr Bertie Ahern T.D. in 1999 following his apology on behalf of the State and the people of Ireland to all survivors who suffered abuse in institutions. The long term effects of this abuse have had severe consequences for those affected across many areas of their lives. The lack of education is one of the main consequences. Aislinn’s goal is to allow a ‘first chance’ at education for those who attend, and help develop survivors ‘hidden talents.
